According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC) Hypertension and Stroke are 2 of the 3 leading causes of death among African Americans.  What is a factor in both of those ? High Blood Pressure. Its more than just diet, which is of course very important, its lifestyle as well. The lucky thing is, HBP is preventable! That means there are things you can do to significantly avoid it, and its nasty consequences. Five easy tips for avoiding HBP are:

  1. Eat a healthy and balanced diet
  2. Maintain a healthy weight
  3. Be physically active
  4. Don’t smoke
  5. Limit Alcohol intake

You may be wondering what this has to do with mental health? Everything! The mind and the body are not autonomous, they work in tandem! Each of those tips can also significantly contribute to your mental well being as well.  Stress can lead us completely astray in our health goals.  Some people smoke, drink, and/or eat when they are stressed which is three of the key factors to avoiding HBP.  In the black community eating healthy often comes at the cost of cultural traditions i.e. sunday dinners (loaded with pork which is high in sodium, greens cooked in salt, fatty starches, and fried proteins)  We have to start making our health a priority if we want to avoid these fatal, and costly health afflictions.
