Black Girls Rock 2010

8 Nov

I hope that you all got to see BET’s Black Girls Rock last night-the above is a stirring performance by Marsha Ambrosius, Ledisi, Jill Scott and Kelly Price, it is a cover of Nina Simone’s “Four Women,” done for For Colored Girls.  It was truly an uplifting and inspirational program and I commend BET for taking a step in the right direction with Black women in media.  That being said, the awards show honored celebrity innovators such as KeKe Palmer, Raven Symone, and Missy Elliot.  They also took time to highlight women breaking ground in their own fields or communities such as Major General Marcelite Harris and Teresa Clark.

BET remarks on the show, “Yes, this show was necessary. It was a celebration of talent, a celebration of success, and more importantly, a celebration of Black women. In the words of the Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant who received the Motivator Award, “Black girls rock, because we have no other choice. We have a responsibility to rock the world, rock the community and rock the planet, so our grandmothers will know that they did not die in vain.” Need I say more?

If you missed the original airing no worries, there will be an encore on Tuesday, November 9th at 8pm EST.  I encourage you all to watch it if you missed it, and if you didn’t watch it again and let your soul be stirred.  After watching I was so extremely proud to be a Black Woman.  Not that I’m not everyday, but to see so many inspirational people in one room was overwhelming (imagine if you were there!).  My favorite quote of the night came from the ever marvelous Ruby Dee a very simple, “I am always becoming.” My kind of lady.
