Key to survival

6 Jan

Last night in class I got a vicarious lesson from a group of survivalists.  Survivalists often prepare for this anticipated disruption by having emergency medical training, stockpiling food and water, preparing for self-defense and self-sufficiency, and/or building structures that will help them to survive (source). My professor was telling us that from his survivalist friends he learned the most important key to survival.  They explained that you cannot possibly prepare for the future, as it houses the unknown.  “You cannot prepare for the unknown, thus the most important key to survival is to invest in relationships.  When you are arming for the unexpected the thing you need most is people you can trust.”

He went on to say that in no other relationship than the intimate relationship with your life partner will you find greater trust.  Relationships…who would have thought that they would be the KEY to survival, but is it not the truth?  Deepak Chopra  says “If we do not value love as the highest truth we will waste our lives and break our hearts.” Putting value in our relationships helps us to survive, and I would even argue that its about more than even surviving but thriving.

Material things come and go, so do some friends, but the people that you keep…the person that you keep in your life should be the one(s) that you can count on no matter what.  Have you found those people yet?? Why have people in your life that have let you down before when you needed them, will they be the ones to follow you into the dark?  Are you equipped for survival?
